TOWN HALL CASTLE (AUDITORIUM) STEPS TO BE REMOVED

The City Council has decided to remove Mazarrón the steps of the auditorium "Marquesa de los Vélez" for security reasons and to avoid further problems, both in the area where the auditorium was built and in the surrounding area where, in addition to the Castle of the town, several homes are located. This was made known to the mayor of the municipality, Ginés Campillo, who has emphasized that these steps will be reused in another municipal area yet to be determined. "It's an investment we can recover from neglect and convert it into something new, we have to reinvent ourselves."

Neighborhood safety and the Castle of Velez, which is in danger of being affected if they continue the earthworks have been instrumental in this decision. Once cleared the stands shall know the extent of the cavity according to a first assessment, could be more serious than at first presumed. According to the Town Planning and Infrastructure, "the problem could have been tackled before, but the neglect of the former government team has endangered not only the heritage of our town, but also the safety of neighbors."

The work, which cost half a million euros, sank in February 2010, two years after its inauguration. To that economic pillar, Mazarron contributed 25% of the total. In addition, given the fact that "for mismanagement of the previous mayor, now we must return a grant of 57,800 euros related to this infrastructure," pointed out Campillo, which means that they have "invested in the municipal coffers 182,800 euros at the end, we have virtually lost in its entirety. Therefore we want to save the steps from further neglect and oblivion for reuse for the benefit of citizens. "

The other main objective is to safeguard the castle dating from the fifteenth century and has been declared of Cultural Interest (BIC). This is also the symbol that gives identity to Mazarrón. When they built the Castle of Vélez it was formed around a core of population called Casas de los alum Almazarron, under which would be located also home to the Marquis of Villena and depended on the Council of Lorca. Hence the importance of safeguarding for the future, and once it is certain that there is no danger, "can be put in value as it really deserves."
