Mazarrón will remember the victims of mining accidents Sunday 19th February, at an event organized by the City Council that will take place from midday next to the monument located at the roundabout by access to the Avenida de Las Moreras.

The event will begin with the performance of the piece "Andante" by J. Adson, in charge of the Music Band of the "Maestro Eugenio Calderón" School. Next, the Mayor, Alicia Jiménez, will address a few words to those present, before handing over to the Parish Priest of San Andrés y San Antonio, Francisco Fernández   .

Afterwards, Maravillas Silva will recite a poem in homage to the victims who died in the mining accidents registered in Mazarrón.

After the interventions, the Mayor, the Parish Priest and members of the Municipal Corporation that are attending the ceremony will proceed to deposit a laurel wreath next to the monument. This gesture will be accompanied by the chords of the Music Band with the interpretation of "Andante y Maestoso" by L. Maurer.

The event will conclude with a third musical interpretation, the one of the subject "Allegro" of J. Adson.

This event was incorporated, last year, to the calendar of institutional acts of the Municipality and joins others as the tribute to the Mazarroneros victims in the concentration camps of Mauthausen, whose memory takes place every December 6 in the Jardín de la Paz de Mazarrón

Accident in the María Elena Well

The reason that the month of February is the date chosen to claim this tribute must be sought in what was the greatest tragedy in the mines of Mazarrón.

On February 16, 1893, 28 miners were killed in an accident at the Maria Elena well of the Impensada mine. It was the most tragic of many accidents in the mining hills during the development of the activity developed mainly from the late nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. The accident at the Maria Elena Well occupied pages of newspapers nationally and even internationally, since among the deceased were engineers and mining officials of European nationality, hired by the company that exploited the mines of Mazarrón.

The numerous losses of that date shocked the people who lived with the constant threat of having to register a new accident. The casualties continued to occur punishing those families who worked in the mines, according to the chroniclers, in situations of precarious work. Deaths in accidents were later added to deaths due to diseases such as silicosis, a lung disease that affected many miners.

More than a century later and 50 years after the ceasing the mining activity, neighbours and relatives of those who lost their lives or became ill from work in the mine asked the City Council to pay homage to those victims.

More than 200 participants have confirmed their attendance to a test that will be aiming for the championship of Spain. The majority of the international cyclists are in attendance, registering more than 120. Several European teams will arrive in Mazarrón, among them the Germans who arrived on Monday 13th, according to Héctor Gómez, Organizer of the test together with the Council of Sports of the City of Mazarrón.

Patricio Sánchez, Councillor for Sports, points out the importance of this test, given its wide international projection, as well as the benefits it brings to the Municipality, especially the hotel sector, since many of the participants will be staying in Mazarrón for a week.

Sánchez encourages the Mazarroneros to come and watch the event on February 18 and 19 at the circuit BMX of the Sports Complex of La Media Legua, unique in the Region of Murcia, between 10am and 2pm and 3pm and 6pm. Mazarrón also has a municipal sports school dedicated to this cycling specialty, which makes use throughout the year of the facilities where this event takes place

Mazarrón will enjoy their carnival with the participation of more than 40 clubs and 2,000 participants who will parade through its streets in the three parades included in the schedule presented by the Councillor of Festivities, Patricio Sánchez.

The Mayor was accompanied by the outgoing musicians Maria Hernandez and Nuria Fernandez who along with the musician Juan Antonio Iglesias encouraged Mazarron to enjoy a party that will have, for the second consecutive year, its continuity in the Marquee installed on Avenida de la Constitution during the parade days.

The amount of the prizes amounts to a total of 8,150€. There will be three prizes for dance schools and three prizes for schools in the children's parade. The local clubs will see 4,500€ being distributed in prizes, awards going to the top 5. The three best visiting groups will also receive a distinction with financial contribution.

The gala of Musa's election will be held on Friday, February 24 at the Municipal Pavilion of La Aceña, starting at 9.30pm. In juveniles there will be no more than one muse being chosen, by joint decision of the Peñas for 2017, Ana Cristina Hernández of la Peña La Cañadica. Las Balsicas "bray" follow a tradition of more than two centuries of history and have their origin in the construction of the small hermitage in honour of the Purísima Concepción. It was then, when the donkeys, which were the main elements of transport, had to raise the materials to the top of the hill where the hermitage was. Everyone ended up exhausted except one, who, according to neighbourhood testimonies, romped and brayed non-stop. The young people gathered there laughing at the animal's attitude and began to imitate him. The anecdote was remembered year after year to become a popular celebration.

The brawler, wearing a hat with coloured ribbons, chooses an audience member and simulates his grooming with a large comb, a horseshoe, barbs and hammer. Good humour and understanding, always within the logical festive context, reign during a day of fun

At 3pm, will be a giant paella for all attendees and musical bingo, followed at 6pm with a performance from David Andreu. At 11pm, fireworks close the fiesta
