NEW WALKING ROUTES TO BE ANNOUNCED. 8 SEPTEMBER

"DISCOVERING MORATALLA"

From Moratalla, northwest of the municipality of Murcia, we invite walkers throughout the region, and why not the world, to know a land that contains well-kept secrets among its cliffs, canyons, mountains and rivers in its rugged terrain that, somehow, has influenced the character of its people and spirit of this "land border".

And its geological history tells us of ancient times, where the man was not just a project. Time passes, and these lands are home to those first men to leave the imprint of their daily struggles, fears, desires and needs in the rock art.

Time and man continues to walk with him, and their evolution bequeathed us not only their genes but also archaeological remains attest their presence and remind us, teaching us how they lived.

The mountains of the Northwest are the lungs of the region, not in vain and is the most rural, and probably as a result, has kept its natural spaces in many cases great and invaluable. The diversity of ecosystems, from the river Segura to the "roof" of the region in Sierra Seca (2015 mts pico de Los Obispos), contain a wealth of biological species, as shown by the presence of endangered ones such as otter and dipper and other important creatures such as the golden eagle, mountain goat or the Griffon Vulture. Remains of mixed forest, gallery forests, forests of juniper and maples are linked to meandering canyons, and the only mountain stream in the region, completes exceptional hiking .

Walking through these mountains, not only means doing outdoor sports. Some of the scenery is so awesome that the walker really gets to communicate our most basic instinct and gets lost to the forces of nature, reminding us that we are part of it.

We intend, through a series of excursions, visiting the places most important to publicize these places full of beauty, history and nature at its purest.

The presentation of these field trips will take place in the Auditorium of the City Council, Moratalla on 6 September at 8.00pm

Active, Inspiring and Successful End to Murcia Dance’s Summer Term

What a fun packed and busy Summer Murcia Dance Dancers have had. From successfully fund raising for much needed dance resources to working in new studios, from participating in Fiestas Camposol events to winning top awards at the Mazarron Festival de Baile, the Murcia Dance programme goes from strength to strength.

Now working under as a project member under the registered charity Arts & Cultural Association of Murcia, Murcia Dance has something to offer for everyone. Principal, Louise Bremner states that “the enthusiasm for the programme from both participants and children’s parents has been overwhelming this term and I’m looking forward to the new term with a whole new activity programme for both adults and children”.

Children from Murcia Dance have raised approximately 700€ in 2 different fund raising events. Their Annual Performance and Presentation held during May raised around 200€ towards a much needed dance mat. 50€ of their funds was donated to the Lions Lorca Appeal.

Their second fund raising event was the Camposol Fiesta Fun Run where already 240€ in sponsorship money has been handed in. Well done to all the children and their families and friends who have supported this new element to the programme in order to help keep costs low for children participating in the many dance activities on offer.

Some children for the first time participated in the Mazarrón Festival de Baile and they did their school, community and families proud. The Camposol Urban Dance Crew, who meet on a Saturday morning during term time, came 1st and joint 2nd in their Under 9 Novice group section. Judges commented that it was good to see boys dancing and to see different levels and abilities working together.

Holly Ryan and Kian Davies won joint 1st place duet in the beginners under 13 section and the schools seniors, Charlotte Moore and Shannon Robertson, received joint 2nd place in the over 13 Beginners Duet. Both heats had a very competitive group of entries from other schools so all dancers in these sections have dome extremely well.

Two top awards were also given to Murcia Dance. Jack Dawson and Shannon Moran placed 1st in their duet also won the highest marked duet from the Under 13 category winning over more advanced duets which is just fantastic for very young dancers at a Novice level.

The lovely Jack Dawson who is a dedicated young dancer won one of the most prestigious awards from the festival, The Most Promising Dancer, Under Age 13, Award for his stage personality, interacting with others whilst showing individuality, musicality, and interpretation of different choreographic material. Teacher Louise states “Jack is a model pupil.  He works very hard, is caring and encouraging in class to other children and has an natural dancing ability. I’m very proud to not only be working with Jack but also all of the young dancers who collectively make up a vibrant community making my work as a teacher of dance relatively easy”.

A whole new programme of dance and performing arts will be running for children, young people and adults from the new Camposol Community Centre and Sensol Hotel from mid September. We have lovely venues suitable for dance, mirrored with barres and suitable flooring. The new timetable will include licenced Zumba Fitness, jazz, street dancing and theatre dance. We will have visiting guest teachers to support the programme for all abilities. For more details visit our website www.murciadance.co.tv or telephone Louise on 655 421 120.

I was impressed by the coordination and determination of the emergency services which have saved lives and homes. I have personally thanked at the crisis centre, the President of Murcia and the Mayor of La Union for the support received by British residents taken to the evacuation centre”

Healthcare authorities confirm attendance at Consulate in Community event in Torrevieja on 8th Sept 2011

The Valencian healthcare authorities have confirmed that they will attend the Consulate in the Community event on 8th September. This is the first time that they have agreed to attend a Consulate event and shows that they recognise the importance of working with the British community to ensure that they are correctly registered for healthcare.

Martyn Standing from the Pension, Benefit and Healthcare team said: “I’m really pleased that the healthcare authorities have agreed to attend this event.  This will enable us to work together to ensure that British nationals living in Spain can access healthcare correctly. In the Valencian region, everyone can register for healthcare, it’s just a question of finding out which cover to get. Having the experts at this event will enable people to find out which cover to apply for and how.”

Other local charities attending the event have also explained why they are looking forward to it. Jacqui Phillips from the association MABS said: “Work done by the Consulate to advise British nationals about where to seek assistance in Spain is invaluable.  Having attended meetings, like the one being held on 8th September, I feel without a doubt, they bring people closer to the department and charities, putting names to faces.

Peggy Wyatt from the Royal British Legion added: “We are delighted to be invited to take part in the “Consulate in the Community” evening.  This is a tremendous opportunity for local British residents – prior to the main meeting - to chat with the many charities and organisations established in Spain offering assistance and advice in co-ordination with the British Consulate.  For the Legion, we appreciate the Consulate giving us an occasion to speak with these organisations and the large numbers of British residents and visitors.  Our aim is to offer assistance and comradeship via our Legion Branches.  By all working together we can improve the “sign posting” of information and aid integration.”

The Consulate in the Community event will be held on 8th September between 19:00-21:00 in the Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen theatre in Torrevieja. The event will be divided into two sections; the first is a “well-fayre”, whereby you will be able to get information from local authorities and different charities that will each have a stand.

Organisations represented are Social services, the Diputación, the healthcare authorities, Age Concern, RBL, MABS, Help Vega Baja, the Alzheimer’s Association and many more.

The second part of the event consists of a presentation given by the Consul in Alicante and the Pension Benefit and Healthcare team to focus on access to healthcare and welfare issues in Spain followed by a short open question and answer session.

This weekend will see the best supermoto racers in Spain making the long journey to Pontevedre for the 4th round of the Spanish Supermoto championships.

Among the racers is Britain’s Anthony Ford – Dunn who will be setting out from his home in Bullas, Murcia to make the 9 hour journey to the circuit that is situated above Portugal on the North West coast of Spain.

Anthony is starting to get his season back on track after a crash had previously forced him out of the Oliva round with no points.

Last time out at Villena, Alicante, Anthony came away with second position after two fine rides saw him secure his current position of 4th in the championship standings. Anthony is pushing hard for wins this year and the Pontevedre track is where he secured his first ever win in the championship last year, so it ranks as one of his favourite circuits.

The www.supermotoland.com team that Anthony rides for has been testing new suspension and chassis parts at a test track near benidorm with continued success. Anthony is delighted with the set up of the bike and will be running Michelin race tyres this weekend for the first time. Mazarron Tourist figures up!

MAZARRÓN showed an increase of visitors during the first half of 2011 over the previous year.

Mazarrón has had this year a greater number of visitors compared to 2010 in regard to the first half. According to data from the web portal "Murcia Turística", in relation to the number of travellers in hotel occupancy, ie, those travellers who have stayed in hotels or pensions in the municipality, the visitors have gone from 15,595 in 2010 to 16,282 in this year. This represents an increase of 4% during the first 6 months of the year compared to the time period between January and June 2010.

Also, note that travelers who have visited our town come mostly from within Spain. Of the 16,282 visitors we had in the first half of 2011, 13,087 were domestic tourists. This has meant an increase of 339 people compared to 2010. This increase in domestic tourists has also given the number of foreign visitors, 3,195 visitors in 2011 compared to 2847 in 2010.

But Mazarrón has not only grown in number of visitors, but has also been a notable increase in overnight stays and average stay of these visitors, 14% and 12.8% respectively. At regional level, presents the same statistics at the local level with an increase in the number of visitors, both in the number of foreign and domestic tourists. Specifically, it has seen a 18% increase in hotel occupancy, up 29.8% of foreign tourists and 15% of Spanish rather than in the first half of last year.

There is a lack of official data at the moment but it also promises a positive summer for tourism in Mazarrón. with an expected increase in occupation over the past year. Also, the first data concerning the month of July collected by the Tourist Office Puerto de Mazarrón show a clear increase of visitors is also expected to occur during the month of August.

Young people have enjoyed a paella, a visit to the Roman Factory Salted and a boat trip in the Bay

200 pilgrims, mostly young, have enjoyed a few days of sun and beach in Puerto de Mazarrón before leaving for Madrid to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) 2011 to be held from 16 to 21 August in the capital of Spain. These pilgrims not only belong to the municipality of Mazarrón, but a large number of them have come from Argentina and Ecuador to attend this celebration. All have been hosted by different families of Mazarrón who opened their doors to welcome and accommodate them.

The faithful gathered on Sunday in the church of San José de Puerto de Mazarrón where a Mass was officiated by the Episcopal Vicar of the Diocese of Cartagena, Francisco Fructuoso.
