EXHIBITION IN MAZARRÓN UNTIL 11 JUNE

The Artist Juan Mariano Balibrea will exhibit at the Town Hall until June 11 at the same time as developing, during these weeks, an educational project aimed at schoolchildren in the Municipality with his work about young people and future creators.

Students from different schools in Mazarrón are visiting The Town Hall and will then attend a practical discussion with the painter.

The Councillors of Education and Culture, Patricio Sánchez and Pedro Martinez have already witnessed two such visits. The deputies accompanied the artist during the practice session he had with students from La Cañadica and Miguel Delibes.

Juan Mariano Balibrea activity runs parallel to the exhibition “Desde mi ventana (zen)”. Balibrea is a Professor of Fine Arts and graduated in Art History at the University of Murcia. He has given numerous workshops, courses and conferences.

The visit from the schools are divided into two stages. First, a tour in which the artist talks about his work, the perception of the landscape in the natural environment and the various expressive forms subsequently used during the workshop to express their ideas, experiences and emotions. In unison, and always with brevity and adapting the presentation to the ages of the children, Juan Mariano focuses on a few works, depending on the generic theme chosen by the school.

Before the creative workshop, the painter presents some images to provide context for the proposal for further work. Secondly, and after a brief explanation of the expressive possibilities of the material (soft waxes), children begin their own creations based on a proposal of wide and divergent nature which may vary according to the number of visitors who come in the group.

The exhibition “Desde mi ventana (zen)" can be seen in Town Hall in the mornings from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 2pm, and in the evenings of Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. The exhibition is closed on public holidays.

Last chance to register for a postal vote in the EU Referendum – deadline 16 May!

British expats living in Spain have until Monday 16 May to register for a postal vote in the EU Referendum. That is the deadline for making sure you can receive your ballot papers in the post and send them back in time for your vote to be counted. Voting papers will be sent out in the week beginning 23 May.

If you do miss the deadline for a postal vote, you can still register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote but you will need to choose someone in the UK to vote for you, known as a proxy vote.

Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, says:

“If you register to vote by 16 May it should be easier to vote by post, as postal votes for the referendum will be sent out earlier than usual, giving you more time to receive, complete, and return your ballot pack to the UK.

“If you wish to vote by proxy, bear in mind that the person you choose to vote on your behalf must be registered and eligible to vote at the referendum.

“The EU Referendum is going to be a significant event and we know lots of UK citizens will want to make their voices heard. Please spread the word. You can go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk for more information.”

British Ambassador Simon Manley adds:

“I know there is a huge amount of interest among Brits in Spain in the EU Referendum. Almost 100,000 people with Spanish IP addresses have so far visited the government webpage where you can register to vote.

“Ultimately, it is for the British people to decide whether we should remain in or leave the European Union, but, whatever they think on the issue, I would appeal to my fellow Brits in Spain not to miss the chance to have their say in this once-in-a-generation referendum.”

Worldwide, more than 140,000 Brits living overseas have now completed the voter registration process since the start of the year. But nearly half of British expats in Spain who are eligible to vote in the UK still remain unaware that they can go online to register to vote, according to a survey by expat website AngloInfo, carried out for the Electoral Commission.
In fact, you can apply online in five minutes with just your National Insurance number and passport to hand. Simply go towww.gov.uk/register-to-vote by 16 May, and apply for your postal vote.
Expats who are active on social media can use http://bit.ly/22zluRK as the short link that will take other British residents in Spain to the ‘register to vote’ webpage.

THEATRE PERFORMANCE - 7 MAY, MORATALLA

 "LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS"
Seymour Krelborn is a young botany enthusiast who works for and is exploited by Mr. Mushnik, a Jewish immigrant who runs a flower shop on Skid Row, a ruined and violent slum who longs to escape. Seymour is secretly in love with his colleague, Audrey, another girl marked by an unfortunate past that is in a relationship with a sadistic dentist who mistreats her. She also wants to leave the neighbourhood and start a new life, although chances are slim for them all.

The fate of the boy seems to change when an exotic plant, fuelled with his own blood, acquires prodigious proportions and attracts many customers to Mushnik, who, selfishly, promotes the young Krelborn to the status of partner. Also Audrey, shocked by the sudden success of Seymour, begins to reciprocate his love.

But the plant,  now turned into a giant fern is revealed as a predatory human blood, pushing the innocent boy to murder.

This play has a strong rock accent and is reminiscent of the horror film series B, which becomes the object of satire. It is a criticism of the American dream and represents a metaphor of how greed and desire for victory can lead a person to create 'monsters' that end up destroying it.
