MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENTS - MAZARRÓN - 27 & 28 FEBRUARY

Mazarrón is hosting this weekend a new sporting event that will attract hundreds of participants from the Region of Murcia and other autonomous communities. In collaboration with the City, Mazarrón Cycling Club organizes the eighth National March Mountain Bike with a distance of 50 kms covering both the coast and interior of the Municipality. The test, starting and finishing at the Sports Complex is of medium-high difficulty, will take place on both Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February. Participants have the option this year of entering both events, and therefore completing a distance of 100km

The event was presented by the Councillor for Sports, Patricio Sánchez and President of the Cycling Club Mazarrón, Francisco Espinosa, who  indicated that the inscriptions are open until midnight on Friday 26th. All information can be found on the website www.mazarronciclismo.es.tl.


The Mayor, Patricio Sánchez,  encouraged all residents and visitors of Mazarron to enjoy the sport and took the opportunity to thank the various local cycling clubs for their work being done so that every weekend has an activity on offer, bringing economic benefits to the shops and hotels in the locality

CUT TO WATER SUPPLY - MAZARRÓN 24 FEBRUARY

La Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla announced a water interruption for Wednesday February 24, starting at 05:00 hours, affecting the water deposits of Mazarrón. Disruption from the Dam will take approximately 24 hours.


The technical services of the Manomunidad express their commitment to stay in touch with the Municipal Officers of the City to prevent minimum disruption and to restore supply as soon as possible.

MINING IN MAZARRÓN - PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

The photographic exhibition "Mazarrón - Mining Heritage" is open until March 28 at the Faculty of Business Science at the Polytechnic University in Cartagena

The inauguration was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Francisco Martinez, the Director General of Cultural Heritage, Maria Comas, Prof. and Dr. in Geological Sciences, José Ignacio Manteca, the author of the exhibition, Juan Francisco Belmar, and the Mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jimenez

The Mayor, Alicia Jiménez, welcomed the holding of this event, "as it helps to raise awareness of the local heritage and helps to spread it." The Mayor stressed that "the work done by the artist goes beyond the merely descriptive aspect, and his work has been shown to many schools and, thanks to him, succeeding generations of Mazarrón have familiarised themselves with its history." She congratulated the photographer, Juan Francisco Belmar, who also is the author of the Semana Santa poster for Mazarrón

For its part, the General Director of Cultural Heritage, Maria Comas, congratulated everyone for the great effort of putting an initiative of this kind in place. Comas also referred to the "photographer's eye," the ability and sensitivity of the artist to capture the viewer's attention on an issue of particular importance as it is the mining heritage.

Photographer, Juan Francisco Belmar, said the ultimate goal of the exhibition in its original design was to introduce the mining heritage among those in Mazarrón, an initiative that was also extended to the schools in the Municipality. He also expressed his gratitude to all the authorities who have made this exhibition possible. He thanked the Director of the Universidad Popular, José María López Ballesta, who was one of the first promoters of the project, as well as the Department of Culture in Mazarrón for their involvement and support and the Polytechnic University and the Directorate General for Cultural Property. Belmar also referred to Professor Jose Ignacio Manteca, Curator of the exhibition for helping and giving his impetus. Belmar also thanked the Mazarróneros who travelled to Cartagena to support this event.


"Mazarrón - Mining Heritage" can be found in the rooms of the building of Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena , and will be on display until March 28 during opening hours . On weekends it is possible to visit the exhibition, by prior arrangement. The exhibition has been supported UPCT, la Universidad de Popular of Mazarrón, the Department of Culture and the City of Mazarrón.

MUSIC CONCERT FOR BABIES - 21 FEBRUARY, MAZARRÓN

The central courtyard of the Cultural Centre in Mazarrón hosts this Sunday 21 February, starting at 11:30 am, a special concert aimed at children and babies


After the success of the concert for babies last October, the Asociación Musical Maestro Eugenio Calderón returns to delve into this new concert format where the prerequisite is public participation, moving and, above all, enjoying music.


La Banda Escuela, formed by young musicians of the Association, will be responsible for interpreting the music and interacting with those in attendance, children, parents and grandparents 

OPEN RALLY BMX COMPETITION 21 FEBRUARY, MAZARRÓN

The Open Rally Murcia, organized by the Federation of Autonomous Cycling begins in Mazarrón this weekend, Sunday February 21, from 9am, the point of departure and arrival being the Sandstone Sculptures in Bolnuevo, with a journey of about 4 kilometers and 150 metres of altitude. 200 participants from different parts of the Spain have confirmed their participation in this competition.
The event, scoring in the ranking of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation, was presented by the Councillor of Celebration of the City of Mazarrón, Patricio Sánchez and President of the Cycling Federation of the Region of Murcia, José López. It is an Olympic sport of mountain biking in all categories involved, from schools to veterans.
Patricio Sánchez stressed that this is a new sports event in the city with foreign participation and of economic benefit for shops, restaurants and hotels. For his part, José López highlighted the conditions and environment Mazarrón offers to cycling and also praised the good work of the cycling clubs of the Municipality. The President of the Cycling Federation of the Region confirmed that there will be further new cycling events organised in Mazarrón.
This competition sees the seventeenth event but this time, according to its organizers, has opted for a model of modern test, incorporating a large number of details that are expected to satisfy the most demanding biker. There will be cash prizes for the top ranked and it will have its own infrastructure and refreshment tent at the end of the test.
The Open Rally Murcia is completed with five other tests in in Lorca, Inazares, Molina de Segura, Pulpí and Águilas. After Mazarrón, the next test will take place in Lorca on 13 March. MurciaCiclismoTV will prepare summaries of all events.

The sign of the competition was developed by the Murcian artist Santi García, the result of a cultural initiative of the Federation. García reflects in his work a biker speeding across a path with natural landscape in the background.

ROAD CLOSURE - PUERTO DE MAZARRÓN

Mazarrón Local Police reports that from Wednesday 10 February, Avenida Tierno Galvan in Puerto de Mazarrón will remain closed to vehicle traffic in the section between the intersections with the streets Aire and La Isla. 

The cut is due to the works to improve the sewage system carried out in the area. The estimated duration of the work, according to municipal officers,  is two weeks.


For buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles there is a detour on Via Axial, from the roundabout of the "triangle" to the roundabout in front of the Plaza Toneleros

SKI TRIPS ORGANISED BY YOUTH COUNCIL OF MAZARRÓN CITY


The Youth Council of the City of Mazarrón has organized another trip to Sierra Nevada between 11 and 13 March. The trip includes a hotel stay of two nights half board, bus transportation, ski lessons and equipment hire.

In addition, snow lovers have another chance on Saturday 20 February. The Department of Youth, through Murcia Bajo Cero programme, organizes a day trip to Sierra Nevada, aimed at young people between 14- and 36 years. More information and registration at the Youth Council.

CARNIVAL WEEKEND IN MAZARRÓN - 13TH AND 14TH FEBRUARY

NEW WEEKEND WITH CARNIVAL PARADE PEÑAS VISITORS AND PARTY TENT DAY
On Saturday 13 February there will be costume contest and free paella. On Sunday 14, parade with the participation of 19 troupes

Mazarrón lives a new weekend of Carnival. Saturday February 13, the Marquee, installed by the bus station in Avda Constitucion, hosts a costume contest with musical performances by local DJs Little Nookie, Ger and Rubi. From 3pm there will be free paella for all those who come in fancy costume. The party will continue in the Marquee until 11pm.

Sunday February 14 will be the grand parade of visitors “peñas” with the participation of 14 troupes, plus five local troupes, being the winners of last Sunday. It will start at approximately 5pm on Avda Constitucion,  finishing next to the petrol station. The order of participants is as follows:

In total there will be about 500 participants travelling on the main street of the town. After completion of the parade, the party will continue in the Marquee, awaiting the jury's decision to present the awards to the visiting clubs.

TEMPORARY CHANGE TO BUS STOP & TRAFFIC DIVERSIONS


Local Police of Mazarrón reports from 4 to 8 February, the bus stop in Mazarrón, located on Avda Constitución changes its location to Calle Via due to the Carnival. Other stops will also be affected on other dates as in the case of the festivities: in front of  Miguel Angel Blanco garden and on the corner of the Municipal Sports Pavilion.


Vehicle traffic on Avda Constitución, will not be affected, except on the days of the parade being 6 and 7 February. There will be diversions from 4pm until closing time of the Marquee (approx. 12am). Also on 14 February from 4pm until the end of the parade.

POETRY COMPETITION

Intended for students enrolled in high schools in the Municipality and adults registered in Mazarrón is a poetry competition. The deadline for submitting entries runs until February 15

The Department of Libraries of the City of Mazarrón has announced the fifth edition of the "declares-te" for students enrolled in the I.E.S. in the Municipality and the fourth edition of the format for adults registered in Mazarrón. 

The event was presented by the Councillor for Education, Patricio Sanchez and Municipal librarian, Magdalena Campillo. The contest coincides with the dates of the Valentine holiday and under that framework  to encourage literary creation in the city.

School students work must consist of a poem and have love as a theme and the deadline for submission is 15 February and will be delivered in the two Municipal Libraries.  The awards consist of a tablet valued at 200€ and a diploma for the first prize, a SmartWatch watch valued at 150€ and a diploma for the second and a voucher for 75€ and diploma for the third best work. 

The jury will be composed of Professors of Language and Literature at Secondary Schools in the Municipality and members of the Department of Culture.

For adults registered in Mazarrón, the theme of poetry will also be love. The deadline for submission will also be until 15 February and will be delivered in the 2 Libraries. The awards consist of prizes to the value of 200€, 150€ and 75€
.

The awards ceremony will take place on February 19 at 8.30pm at the Cultural Centre of Mazarrón.
Carnival 2016 began work on Saturday 30th January with a dinner between “Peñas”, at which time the names of the candidates for “Musa” of this year were announced. The Asociacíon Cultural La Canadica introduced Nerea Martinez Navarro, aged 12. La Peña Rosa Playas de Percheles is Nuria Fernandez Urrea, aged 8 and the Collegio Ginés García submitted their candidate Andrea Muñoz Urrea, aged 6. The candidates this for Musa Youth are María Hernández Zamora of the Peña Ambarela and Estela García Soto of the Asociación Peña Caño del Molino
The dinner, running in a festive atmosphere, was attended by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jiménez and Councilman for Celebration, Patricio Sánchez, along with other members of the Municipal Corporation. Also attending were the outgoing Muse and Muso, Lucia Lopez Rodriguez and Juan Antonio Iglesias.
Programming of the Carnival continues this Friday, February 5, at 9.30pm in the Pavilion of La Aceña with the Gala Election of Musa 2016. There will be a costume contest and election of the carnival of the year.
Developments this year include an increase in the value of the prizes amounting to a total of 8,150€. Furthermore, in order to extend the Carnival for the Peñas, Citizens and Visitors a marquee area will be installed overnight by the bus stop in Avda Constitucíon, which will be open day 6 and 7 February from 5pm-11pm and will be attended by local DJs.
The children's parade will be held Saturday February 6th, from 5pm, departing next to the garden of La Paz and travelling up Avda Constitucíon. The awards ceremony will be held in the marquee,  at the end of the tour. There will be distribution of prizes among dance schools and the participating colleges. Two awards will be given for the dance schools and two to the colleges.
Sunday February 7 will be the day of the parade of local clubs, following the same route as the children's parade and again from 5pm. This year as a novelty, the Town Hall have tried to encourage participation by adding a fifth prize. Delivery, after the assessment of the jury, will also be in the marquee

Finally, on Sunday February 14 will see the parade by the visiting clubs and the winning five local clubs. In the parade there will be chairs available
