Along with the mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jimenez, each of the representatives of the organisation of the event presented this new edition calling on Mazarrón to collaborate. They need hygiene products and support, insofar as possible, to serve families who need a hand to get ahead. From 10 am to 7 pm at Carpa de Día de Mazarrón, and opposite Plaza de Abastos in Puerto de Mazarrón, the marathon will play during which phones will be answered to receive donations. They will also release an account number to pay the money you wish to donate.

WALK WITH WARM - 8 DECEMBER

This is a longer walk than normal, being between 18 and 19 Kms, and will take us on a circular route that ascends and descends between 613 metres to 800 metres at our highest point. From our meeting point we will walk up to the La Puerta del Caballo following a familiar narrow track up a barranco and through the pine woods. We will ascend 187 metres over this first stretch of about 2 Kms. We then continue down from La Puerta to the plains of Ardal using narrow woodland tracks and we will have good views across to La Fuente de Caputa. After walking over part of the plains we will enter woodland again as we make our way to the Estrecho del Moro following the contours parallel to the mountain. On this section we have to cross several steep barrancos which will involve a few short, steep descents and ascents. On reaching the estrecho we will start our ascent back up the mountain to El Collado de Moro which is a steady uphill section rising just over 200 metres in 3 to 4 Kms. From here it is all downhill through the woods to our original meeting place.

Meeting (see directions below)

Place: Forestry car park above La Bermeja (north side of the Sierra de Ricote)
Time:  To leave at 10:30 am

Refreshments:

As the walk will take 5 hours plus stops, please bring a picnic lunch and plenty of water. Sticks may be useful on some stretches of the route.

·      Continue for approx 4 or 5km. Turn right (ignore the first turn) at the sign for La Bermeja (an old school house with recycling bins and a bus stop)
·      Continue uphill for approx 3km (slow road, occasional sharp bends). Eventually the tarmac runs out and becomes a forestry track with a few tight bends at the beginning but the surface is ok for a normal saloon car.

WORLD BIRD DAY ACTIVITIES - MAZARRÓN

Once again, the Department of Environment of the City of Mazarrón and Club de Senderismo Amigos de la Naturaleza celebrate World Bird Day. They will do this weekend with a programme of events that aims to raise awareness of respect for the natural environment and its wildlife.

On Saturday October 3rd from 10 am until 13 pm, a stand will be installed in the weekly market of Mazarrón displaying a sample of the most typical birds that inhabit the South East peninsular. Younger children will be encouraged to participate in this exhibition through different activities.

The programme of events continues on Sunday October 4th at 10 am in the wetlands of the rambla de las Moreras, a place of great natural value with the presence of a large number of species, some endangered species such as white-headed ducks that choose this natural place to breed.

The Mayor of Mazarrón and the Councillor for the Environment encourage families to take advantage of the weekend to perform different activities that also serves to appreciate the rich natural heritage within our Municipality and raise awareness of the importance of respect and conservation.

CALLING ALL SINGERS!

Do you like to sing – alone in the shower or with friends? Maybe you are in a choir and looking for something a little different to enjoy as a group? Never sung in a group before? No problem – we can help you!

In October the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) is offering a unique opportunity to singers everywhere to learn a cappella four part harmony in a weekend.

If you like to sing and have never tried this before you will love it! If you are an old hand, there will definitely be something new to learn from fabulous International men’s quartet, Reckless, who are being flown in from the UK especially to work and play with us.

Put the date October 2nd to 4th in your diary now and enjoy this special weekend! It’s not too late to sign up and get your teach tracks and music, just go to the website: www.sabs.es and click on the Harmony College logo for full information.

We will be based at the Hotel Costa Narejos in the lovely resort of Los Alcázares in Murcia. The Hotel Costa Narejos is by the beach and you can bring your family, and even extend your stay at our very special rate, if you would like to.

Singers of all ages will be really welcome and can enjoy singing in a men’s, ladies’ and mixed chorus. You will be learning two a cappella songs during the weekend.

SABS is keen to spread the joy of learning this art form throughout Spain. “We had a wonderful time last year at this event which is open to everyone who likes to sing” said SABS President, Lyn Baines. “It’s a great weekend, with a chance to make new friends as you sing together. Yes, it’s quite hard work but such fun as well and, on the closing afternoon, everyone will get a chance to perform to an invited audience of family and friends.”

Lyn goes on to remind us of the relaxation time “Get to know your new friends better at the ‘afterglows’ at the end of each day. This is a very unique time when people get together to chat and sing.”

Full details of the SABS Harmony College can be found at http://www.sabs.es/cm2/?page_id=3919 or email registrations@sabs.es to find out how you can become involved in this very special weekend. Places are limited and are being snapped up fast, so please make sure you register today; we don’t want you to be disappointed!

SABS - committed to encouraging barbershop singing through
Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM HAH MAR MENOR

HAH Help at Home, have been successfully helping clients for the past 5 years, 500+ clients helped and thousands of FREE hours have been put in by our volunteers.

However, when we started our intention was to help people struggling following illness, hospital treatment etc for a SHORT TIME, not for either replacing hospital or medical treatment, nor for long term treatment.

Unfortunately, we have many clients who need ongoing treatment, probably for the rest of their lives, and with the best will, we cannot offer this. We do not have enough volunteers to cope, and therefore we have to limit time per client to 3 months when the situation will be reviewed.

So many people do not make adequate provision for old age, which is inevitable, do not have sufficient funds to pay for help, do not want to go in a home, nor go back to the UK, so ask us for help, which we always try to do.  However, it has now reached the situation whereby we cannot take on any more long term clients, and will have to refuse requests for this.

We always do our utmost to help, but it really is everyones’ responsibility to ensure that they have the funds available to cope with these situations, and also to have funeral plans in place.
