DAY OF PALMS, OLIVES AND DRUMS, MAZARRON

Mazarron has lived intensely on 1 April, celebrating Palm Sunday processions in both Mazarrón and Puerto Mazarrón. The first to be held took place in Mazarron. From 10.30am from the garden of La Paz a parade took place which included participants from Cabildo de Cofradías de Semana Santa de Mazarrón and children's groups from each of the guilds, with a small throne with an image of Jesus standing on donkey recalling Christ's entry into Jerusalem.

Hundreds of young and old passed through the Avenida Constitución and Plaza del Convento up to the Shrine of La Purisima, where the parish priest of San Antonio and San Andres, Julio Romero, blessed the palms and olive branches carried by the faithful. The processesion was attended by the Mayor Ginés Campillo.

In Puerto de Mazarron the meeting point for this day of celebration was the chapel of San Anton located in the garden district of San Isidro. This time, the parish priest of San Jose, Justo Jose Sanchez, blessed the palms and olive branches on the doors of the little church at 12 noon. Started by the band of drums of the Virgin of Sorrows, the procession walked the streets of Cartagena and San Isidro until arriving at the temple of San Jose. This procession was attended by the council of Celebration, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Isidro Coy.

The President of the Cabildo de Cofradías de la Semana Santa Mazarronera, Cecilia Morales and the President of the Cofradía de San Juan, Andrés Navarro, placed a laurel wreath at the foot of the Monumento al Nazareno in honour of all the brothers and memories of those who have died this year. The drum parade ended with a delicious chocolate cake that was enjoyed by all those present. This event was attended by the Councillor for Youth, Sports, Finance and Revenue, Andrew James.
