FEBRUARY 2ND - WORLD WETLANDS DAY EVENT

Every February 2 is celebrated around the world ‘Día Mundial de los Humedales’ (World Wetlands Day). commemorating the date chosen for the ‘Convención sobre los Humedales’  in 1971 . The theme chosen for this year  is " Wetlands and Agriculture : Together for Growth " , with the aim of raising awareness of the vital role wetlands plays in agricultural support and to publicize the great biodiversity of these ecosystems.

So this Sunday, 2 February , the Directorate General Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia , through ' Grupo Generala' , has organized a special day in the wetlands of the Lagunas de las Moreras to celebrate ‘Día Mundial de los Humedales’  with the aim of publicizing the activities of the project ‘LIFE09 NAT/ES/000516 Conservación de la Malvasía Cabeciblanca en la Región de Murcia’.

The event has the support of the Department of Environment of the City of Mazarrón. Councillor of the area, David Fernandez , explained that "we also have the support of Asociación ‘ALCEDO’, el Centro de Buceo del Sureste ‘Bachisub’ and la asociación ‘Amigos de la Naturaleza’ , helping the conservation of the White-Headed Duck , a water bird that is threatened worldwide and whose only European population is in Spain . "

The day will start at the Estación Depuradora de Aguas Residuales (E.D.A.R.) in Mazarrón at 10:15 am to meet and greet participants . At 10:30 am there will be an introductory talk on wetlands and the actions of the ' Project LIFE Conservation of White-headed Duck ' at 11:30 am. To end the activity, distribution of gifts will be presented among the attendees.

The Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, encouraged the citizens of the Municipality " to participate in this activity , since in very few places in the world can you see the presence of the white-headed duck . It is our duty to help conserve and protect our flora and fauna as they are part of our rich heritage and ultimately , are also a key part of the benefits of the town that can be exploited in regards to nature tourism . "

ART EXHIBITION

Until 21 February the building of  Casas Consistoriales of Mazarrón, located in Town Hall square, gathers the exhibition ‘Identities’ whose authors are the young Pedro Alonso of Mazarrón and the artist Loles Gallego of Murcia. The inauguration of the exhibition, that took place last Friday, was led by the Councillor for Culture, María Celeste Soria, and the authors. Joining them, besides family, friends and neighbours; were Ángel Rodríguez and Isabel Hernández, organizers of the exhibition and representatives of the artistic collective ‘Pinco Palo’ to which Alonso and Gallego belong.
María Celeste Soria congratulated to both artists “as we face an exhibition fresh and full of energy and vitality” and invited the citizens “to know the work of these young artists, to who we receive with affection in this exhibition space”. By his part, Ángel Rodríguez qualified to the artists of “big promises of the art” highlighting “the ‘pop footprint’ of the works of Loles and the portraits and photos of Pedro, both being an example of the step and identity that the man leaves on earth”.
Loles Gallego thanked the “Town Hall of Mazarrón and to everybody who made possible this exhibition” and explained that “my part is based in the identity and in the way in which it is expressed, the identity that makes each thing different and special ”. Hence, the works of this young artist use the footprints and profiles of the ‘skylines’ of different cities as the focus of her work  and from which she creates new images full of strength and colour. Her works are shown in the basement and on the main floor of the building.
Meanwhile, Pedro Alonso explained that  “my part is divided into two spaces. On one hand, a comparative between 1913 and the present that that causes the passage of time and a photographic exhibition with a tour of the current mining scene. On the other hand, a part more focused to the human figure using, besides sculpture, the painting or the drawing; other techniques more innovative. His works are shown in the basement and in the main room of the ground floor of the building.

The exhibition can be visited Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Entrance is free.
