Big crash keeps Britain’s Anthony Ford-Dunn in 4th Position in the 2011 Spanish Supermoto championship
Britains expat racer, Anthony Ford –Dunn had his hopes of elevating his final position in the 2011 Spanish Supermoto Championship thwarted by a heavy crash in the first of his two races at the Albaida circuit, Valencia.
The day had started under a dark cloud after news of the terrible accident suffered by Marco Simoncelli in the Malaysian MotoGP that would claim his life. There was an air of disbelief around the Supermoto Paddock as everyone came to terms with the loss of the likeable and popular Italian racer.
Anthony prepared himself for his qualifying practice session and set off at a fast pace around the spectacular Albaida circuit. With a large off-road section that included some big vertical drops and a massive 20 metre table top jump, before the riders swept back onto the fast tarmac race track, the Albaida circuit definitely sorted the men from the boys.
On the 6th lap of qualifying Anthony’s engine broke and he had to retire from the session. The www.supermotoland.com team had to work fast in order to change the engine within 1 hour and 30 minutes before the first SM1 race. The new engine was installed in the nick of time and Anthony lined up in 5th position on the grid for his first race.
When the start lights went out Anthony was soon in the thick of the action and fought his way up to 3rd place, but he was struggling with the position of his gear shift pedal on his new engine which made changing gear difficult. Midway through the race Anthony missed a gear as he approached the big tabletop jump and was launched over the handlebars as he landed. The resulting impact was enough to rule Anthony out of the rest of the day’s races, although he was fortunate not to sustain any broken bones.
Without the opportunity to complete any of the days races Anthony had to be content with finishing 4th overall in this year’s SM1 Spanish championship. ‘4th position is a little disappointing as I was 2nd in 2010, but I have had some bad luck this year that has prevented me from performing as well as I would have liked.’ said Anthony as he hobbled back from the circuit medical centre.
Anthony’s older Brother Mat Ford – Dunn also finished 4th in his championship. Mat was racing in the SM road category that misses out the dirt section and races only on the tarmac race circuit. After qualifying on the front row in 3rd position Mat was confident of a good result but a poor tyre selection meant that his rear tyre overheated and started to lose grip as the race went on. He slowly slipped back to finish in 6th position and was lucky to finish at all after his rear tyre started to fall apart.
Both brothers will next be racing in the Catalan championships on the 6th of November at the Alcarras circuit in Lleida.

Mazarrón FC report: Aguileño 1 Mazarron 0
Despite Aguieno’s higher league placing, there was little between the teams on the day and the hosts were fortunate to end up with all three points.
The pitch and most of the Mazarron fans were well watered before the game by a somewhat rogue watering system and this certainly helped the appearance of the pitch if not the fans.
Poyatos again partnered Diego at the back, but once again Robert was left to plough a lone furrow up front. However Mazarron had much the better of the opening half and had several chances to score, including a 30 yard shot from Robert which hit the bar and went over.
After several Mazarron corners had failed to produce an opening, the Aguileno keeper made a good save from one of Robert´s efforts. The score remained level at half time despite the award of a dubious free kick against Jose which fortunately came to nothing.
In the second half Aguileño came more into the game and missed what can only be described as two sitters. However, following an injury to Chico on 60 minutes, Aguileno took the lead in controversial circumstances. A Mazarron player had played the ball into touch to allow Chico to receive attention but, with everyone expecting Aguileño to give the ball back from the resultant throw in, Ivan hit the ball from almost the half way line over the top of Jose and into the net.
The game then more or less petered out and the only events of real note were the booking of Aguileño´s trainer for time wasting and the surprising introduction late on of youth team striker Habibe rather than the more experienced Edin who was left on the bench!
On the bright note there were only two bookings, Rivero and Alcaraz, neither for dissent.
Man of the match Alcaraz (2nd week running)
Team: Jose, Borja, Diego (Rollon jnr), Poyatos, Alcaraz, Juan Antonio, Chico, Rivero (Chema), Pescau (Habibe), Abdel, Robert.

Mazarrón FC report: Mazarron FC 1 Jumilla CD 0
With Poyato replacing the injured Juan Andres in central defence and Rivero supporting Robert up front, Mazarron played a slightly more attacking system than recently. They were rewarded with a victory against Jumilla which moved them up to 15th place in the league.
In the 8th minute a long throw in was met on the volley by Rivero but unfortunately his goal bound shot was deflected wide and from the resulting corner, Rollon headed wide when well placed.
Further Mazarron pressure revealed the Jumilla goalkeeper’s lack of confidence but despite being well on top for most of the first half there was no score at half time. Jumilla’s only real attempt on goal was thwarted by a good save from Jose after 42 minutes.
In the second half Rollon was booked for an off the ball incident and then Abdel blazed the ball over when put through by Rollon. Jumilla came into the game more and there were several good chances at both ends. For Mazarron, Abdel and Robert both had shots saved by the keeper and after 71 minutes a Jumilla forward headed over with no one near him!
Edin then had a clear chance but shot weakly at the keeper. As time began to run out Mazarron really applied the pressure and, in injury time, a series of three consecutive corners and a throw in saw the ball arrive in the box for Pescau to hammer home his third goal of the weekend, his first two being for the juniors on Saturday.
It gave Mazarron a well deserved victory, although the margin of victory could have been much greater.

MATCH REPORT FOR MAZARRON FC, 9 OCTOBER
Huercal – Overa 4 Mazarron 0
Mazarron travelled to Almeria to face the league leaders and fell behind in the 12th minute when a sweetly hit shot from 25 yards crept into the bottom corner of the net.
Mazarron did have a few chances in the first half including a shot on the turn from Eloy, following a corner, but this was well saved by the keeper. Unfortunately, a second goal soon followed for Huercal-Overa when the Mazarron defenders failed to reacted to a quickly taken free kick which left the centre forward unmarked and with the simple task of turning the ball past Peru.
Juan Antonio sent a header over the bar from a rare Mazarron corner but was then booked for complaining to the referee about a stray elbow which caught him in the face and forced him to leave the pitch for treatment.
Mazarron made two substitutions at half time but soon fell further behind when a series of intricate passing movements led to a third goal for the home team with an easy finish from close range, yet again by an unmarked attacker.
At this stage Poyato made his long awaited return to the team after injury, but unfortunately his only real contribution was to get booked along with Peru in disputing Huercal-Overa’s fourth goal which came after 70 minutes. A free kick on the right was floated high over the Mazarron defence and headed into the net by the home team’s captain and central defender.
Peru made a number of excellent saves in the closing stages of the game and was presented with his Man of the Match award by Steve Hady at the end of yet another disappointing day for Mazarron.

Red Cross Fundraiser
The following is posted on behalf of Ken Payne of PALS.
The RED CROSS (Cruz Roja) in Mazarron are in need of a replacement ambulance.
They have proposed that an open day event and display by them should be held on the 6th November at which they would have food and drink available donated by local Mazarron businesses.Tickets for these would be sold and the net proceeds put into a fund for the new ambulance.
PALS advised the Officers of Cruz Roja who were accompanied by the Ayuntamiento that a fund to purchase a new ambulance already existed and that some 40000Euros were banked in PALS Account with Barclays and that the money had been raised over 4 years in CAFE. PALS asked that if the Ayuntamiento were agreeable to release the pledge that CAFE had made then those funds could be made available to help purchase the ambulance for Cruz Roja and that with a big push from the Expat community particularly on Camposol, but with other replica events iin Puerto de Mazarron and in Bolnuevo it might be possible to purchase the ambulance much earlier than the 3 years anticipated for the Ayuntamiento and with luck within a year.
The various representatives of organisations present at the meeting were all in favour and it was suggested that the event was held as proposed on Sunday the 6thn from 1 till 5pm on the car park opposite the commercial centre on Sector B, it was also suggested that there should be music, The Sector D representative advised that they have a system for a DJ that may be available, It was also agreed that maybe a tombola was jointly held and other individual stalls.
The tickets will be produced by Cruz Roja and distributed to the various organisations for sale prior to the event.Cruz Roja advised that the British Counsel has agreed to attend with dignitaries from the region and Ayuntamiento.
The publicity for the event will be divided between Rod Sawyer who will produce copy for The Costa Calida Chronicle as well as the Mediterrania and myself who is sending this information to Simply Networking, Costa Calida International Radio and prior to the event to Sol Times, Euro weekly, RTN and The Leader.
Subsequently BYRON has agreed to host and compare the event using the Sector D equipment. Please contact each other.
I know that The Fiesta Committee have a large canopy which I hope they will make available and if the Sound equipment proposed is insufficient again hope that they will be as generous as usual.
For this event it is logical that CRA take the lead and their President is currently in the Uk but information is being passed to him, PALS cannot do much more as they have an event on 5th November and are away on their cruise from 21st/25th October but can and will help in any way possible.
Can we all pull together on this, we are hoping that the Alcalde will attend a development meeting next Friday 14th at the Social Centre at 1pm if you can send representatives or attend yourself we can really get this show on the road.
Please pass this on to anybody you feel may be interested and/or who may have an input.
I think this covers everything at this stage if you have any queries then please contact me either by email or call 626 460 465

Supermoto Brothers start the 1900 km trip to Belgium for the International Superbiker Trophy.
Anthony and Mat Ford – Dunn, Murcia’s two racing brothers are making final preparations for this weekend’s international supermoto race in Mettet, Belgium. The prestigious event in Belgium is known as the superbiker race and features the very best racers from motocross, road racing and supermoto, from all over the world competing in one fantastic race meeting.
Over 350 supermoto riders will be battling it out for a place in the superbiker final by competing in a number of qualifying heats and last chance races until the 350 become 40. The last 40 riders then line up on the grid for the grand final over 12 laps of the gruelling Mettet race circuit that features both a high speed tarmac race track combined with four dirt sections and a multitude of jumps and bermed corners.
The racing is frantic with the world’s best attempting to win the superbiker trophy and the 4000 Euros cash prize that goes with it.
Anthony Ford-Dunn has his sights set on the top prize but he knows that it will be a very tough job to beat the world’s best riders at this event and he is using the weekend to gauge his performance against others for an assault on the supermoto Grand Prixs in 2012. ‘It will be a great opportunity for me to ride against the world’s best Supermoto riders and learn from their style and technique and hopefully score a good result from racing against them.’ said Anthony when asked about his chances.
The Brothers have been busy testing and preparing their bikes for the event that starts this Friday morning with the Final race on Sunday night. They are both feeling confident after some excellent results in the recent Spanish and European championship events with the www.supermotoland.com team that is sponsored by Advance Moves, the Murcian based International removal company.
Further details on this weekend’s event and the www.supermotoland.com activities can be found on the links below:-

Mazarrón FC report: Mazarrón 2 El Palmar 4
Against El Palmar, who started the game in 3rd position in the league, Mazarrón were not helped by their willingness to press the self destruct button at will and by a referee resembling a lollipop lady with fluorescent orange top and whistle to match.
However, despite this, Mazarrón led 1 – 0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Juan which came following a good run down the left by Rollon which resulted in a corner. The flag kick caused chaos in the visiting defence and centre half, Andres, rifled the ball into the net from 20 yards.
Shortly afterward Chico was harshly booked for a tackle which appeared to be legal in all senses. This proved to be decisive later on in the game when he was booked for a second time presumably for something he said to the referee as play was nowhere near him at the time and the inevitable red card followed.
Towards the end of the half came possibly the worst decision ever seen on the ground when juvenile keeper, Ruben, collected a headed back pass and after a delay of 20 – 30 seconds the referee gave a free kick against him. Fortunately nothing came from this and half time came with the score still at 1 – 0.
The second half started with Mazarrón still holding their own and following a good run by Abdel down the wing Juan Antonio hit a cracking shot just wide of the goal. However, after another dubious free kick, an El Palmar forward was left completely alone on the right and he met the ball on the volley to bring the scores level.
Some 5 minutes later Ruben fumbled a cross from the right and it was tapped into an empty net to put the visitors undeservedly ahead. Mazarrón then had several good chances, including a shot saved by the keeper’s feet when he had dived the wrong way, and another where he fell over whilst collecting a back pass only to recover just in time to hack the ball away as it was about to cross the line.
After Chico was sent off, Rollon trod on the ball in midfield and the ball broke for El Palmar to add a third goal. Almost immediately, Diego was caught in possession and El Palmar again broke away in almost identical fashion to make the score 4-1.
Mazarrón had the last word when a free kick was met with a powerful header into the roof of the net by Diego to make the final score 4-2 to El Palmar.
Man of the Match: Edin
Team: Ruben, Borja, Diego, Juan, Alcazar, Rollon, Chico, Juan Antonio, Diego jnr, (Rollon jnr\0 (Robert), Edin, Abdel (Rivero).

The URGENCIAS Car park is free for the first 30 mins, but the charges are then astronomical eg. 1 hour 1.15c, 3 hours 19.65, 8 hours 52.40c, max daily charge of 65.50c. Please be aware of these charges before you park, as waiting times in the hospital can sometimes be quite long.

We regret to inform you that the Curry Night at the Maharaja Palace Restaurant on 12 October has to be cancelled. Several attempts have been made recently to contact various people involved with the restaurant, but to no avail. Money will of course be refunded, and we will endeavour to try and arrange another venue for the same price as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,
