For the third year Mazarrón Bahia will be lit, this time by
over a thousand lanterns. This is to benefit the charity Caritas and will take
place from 11pm on Saturday August 15. This year the number of lanterns being
released are between 1000-1200. Throughout the day, two booths that are set up
on the promenade will be selling lanterns for the price of 4€ each. The money
raised will be donated to Caritas as confirmed at the presentation ceremony by
the Mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jimenez, accompanied by Councillor of Social
Policy and Celebrations, Laura Sanchez and Patricio Ortiz, respectively.
Concepcion Aparicio, President of Caritas of Puerto de
Mazarrón, recalled the importance of this activity as every penny raised will
benefit the most disadvantaged. Caritas helps more than 150 families in the
Port, offering support to those in extreme poverty and terminally ill patients.
With the objective and responsibility to always ensure
safety, this activity is at the mercy of the weather, so it could undergo
changes in its organization, as the Mayor said, Alicia Jimenez.
