Unfortunately due to bad weather conditions on 11 June, the trip to Tabarca Island with Dragontours had to be cancelled and a is now taking place on 16 June. Tabarca Island, is a paradise just a 30 minute boat ride away from
the coast. If you are looking for a relaxing day out, with myriad possibilities
for sports, gastronomy and even learning a bit more of Spanish history, with
none of the hassle, come along with us.
The island has a fascinating past
and there are still many historical buildings, including a church and an
abandonned prison. At one time this
island served as a hideaway for Barbary (North African) pirates who raided the
Spanish mainland during much of the 16th and 17th centuries. Finally populated
by order of King Charles III, in the 18th century, the island still boasts
constructions from that time. The Governers's house has been converted into a
small but lovely hotel.
The whole area is a
world-heritage site for underwater flora and fauna. Scuba diving is strictly
restricted to those who obtain special permission, but snorkelling is encouraged
and worthwhile, as the water is incredibly clear, fish are abundant as are the
various sorts of algae. The best known is Posidonia, and much of the island is
made up of the spongy accumulation of this plant. Around the island is found
the largest “prairie” of Posidonia, proof of the healthy clean water found
here.
On the island you can find many
bars and restaurants to make the day complete, after snorkelling in the
crystal-clear water or taking a swim and sun-bathing on the well-equipped
beach. The best loved meals are made with the freshest fish – try the Tabarcan
“Caldero”, fish and rice stew, served with garlic sauce. If your tastes are
less exotic, try a salad, grilled sea bass, or even a hamburger. There is
something for everyone on the island.
Price is just 32€pp to include coach and boat
