MAZARRÓN CARNIVAL - FEBRUARY 2013

Everything is prepared for the celebration of the Carnival this year, the programme being unveiled on 28 January by the Councillor of Celebration, Isidro Coy, who was accompanied by the current Head of the area, Jose Baltazar.

Coy explained that "the Carnival will begin with a parade on Friday February 8 by the Brazilian group “Pandeiro “, before holding the election for “Carnival Musos and Musas 2013”, followed by dancing to the sound of Batukada music starting from the Plaza Convento,  at 8pm, proceeding to Calle del Pino, Calle Progreso and Calle La Vía, and finishing at `La Aceña ' where the gala will be held from 9pm.

During the evening the proclamation of the Carnival will be read by the Queen of the Festivities 2012, Ana Cristina Hernandez. Carnival goers will also appoint a reward for best individual costume with a prize of 100 euros. It is for this reason that the Councillor of Celebration has requested that "all the neighbours go to the hall dressed for a fun night to show their support in the festivities”.

The other major fiesta day is on Sunday February 10 when, after 4pm, the Carnival Parade starts in Mazarrón with several new features. The first is to change the parade route, starting at the former barracks of the Guardia Civil and ending at the Explanada de Protección Civil, after proceeding down  Avenida de la Constitución. Furthermore, as the Councillor said, "the new tour this year allows us to be fully illuminated and avoid some bends in the road, making it spectacular".

Another aspect to  promote this year's parade is the presence of foreign clubs, for the first time, competing with each other to get one of the two awards that were announced for the troupes from outside the municipality valued at 300 and 200 euros respectively. The local clubs also compete for one of the three main prizes of these celebrations consisting of 1200, 900 and 600 euros, while the children's clubs will compete for three special prizes of 650, 500 and 450 euros. As explained by the Councillor of Celebration "a dozen clubs have already contacted us to parade on Sunday, and 7 have confirmed that they will come to Mazarrón".

The parade will end with a big party at the Explanada de Protección Civil , where the awards will be presented and a mobile disco will provide the entertainment. The Councillor of Celebration said they wanted to make a special close to the Carnival this year” and finished by announcing the Carnival Consistory  have decided not to schedule anything on the Monday or Shrove Tuesday, to enhance the Sunday proceedings.

The parade this year will be special but in Summer it´s Puerto de Mazarrón´s turn to host a Carnival ., on 13 July. "We believe it will be good to move part of the Carnival to Summer as there will be more spectators and various components of the groups will march again. No doubt there will be more people than we had on the Monday and Tuesday of the Carnival last year ", said Coy, who recalled that" we fix what we do not like, and extend the festivities if people respond or propose a new idea. We are also considering the possibility to hold a competition for the poster of the Carnival next year.”

The Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, has called for public participation. "We must show that Mazarrón is a town that likes the Carnival - dress up to attend the gala and actively participate at the Sunday parade or as a spectator."  The Mayor  "wants to see that this Carnival is a celebration,  little by little making room for more activities. But we must go step by step, joining forces together, and directing them to our goal. I hope this year we take a big step in this direction. "
