On 16 September the I Triathlon "Villa de Mazarrón" Championships was held in Bolnuevo with the participation of 14 autonomous communities and the Autonomous City of Melilla with up to 200 athletes. The only communities failing to attend were Cantabria, La Rioja, Valencia and Ceuta. The test took place in a gorgeous day of over 30 degrees and calm and clear waters for the triathletes.
Galicia was the region that eventually won the general classification. Catalonia were second on the podium and the Community of Madrid, finished third. The championship was very exciting as the men's race was won by the team from Catalonia, followed in second place by Galicia and Castilla La Mancha in third place, while in females category Galicia was followed by Catalonia in second place and Madrid taking third.
Despite the closeness of the championship, Galicia showed a good command of this sport as the overall winners in men and women were athletes representing this community. The men's race was won by Jesus Gomar García followed by Isaac Lopez Carrion second and Ricardo Hernandez Marrero canary in third. In the females category three Galician triathletes took a clean sweep of the podium. These were Marta Jimenez Jimenez, Aida Valino Gomez and Melina G. Alonso Aradas.
The trophies and medals were presented close to the erosions of Bolnuevo and was attended by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, the General Director of Physical Activity and Sports, Antonio Peñalver, President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, José Hidalgo, President of Triathlon in the Region of Murcia, Diego Calvo, and councilors Andres Valera and Miguel M ª García.
The test took place without incident and had a great attendance by Civil Defense and Red Cross. The first provided one van, two all-terrain vehicles, 1 assistant and 4 volunteers, while Red Cross deployed two ambulances SVB, 3 rescue watercraft, 1 rigid inflatable rescue, 4 kayaks, 3 terrain vehicles, one van and 38 volunteers to cover security, rescue and health care. The Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, wanted to express his thanks for "the excellent work carried out by Red Cross and Civil Protection living up to the demands of this important sporting event."
The Mayor also wanted to acknowledge the work of the volunteers of Club Deportivo "Bahia Mazarrón" and the Club Ciclista Mazarrón who also showed "great professionalism and commitment to the organization of this successful triathlon. We have shown that together we can do great things. " Other thanks went to Aguilas and Fuente Alamo who contributed material for the smooth running of the championship. The test is one more that is born under the commemoration of the 440 anniversary of the granting of the privilege of Villa and is "set to become a first class event in the sporting calendar made under the umbrella of the 440" .
