THE OFFICIAL SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES OF SAN JAVIER ORGANISES THEIR ‘chariTEA’ EVENT FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

The Official School of Languages of San Javier has organised, for the second consecutive year, a beneficial tea for four associations in the region of Mar Menor: AIDEMAR, MABS Cancer Support Group, ADAPT and HELP. The event will take place on Thursday 22 March, between 4.00 pm and 8.00 pm at the San Javier Civic Centre, located in the Parque Almansa. Everyone is welcome.

This activity aims to raise awareness of the commendable work and the help that these organisations provide and to encourage volunteerism in the area. Moreover, since some of these charities are formed mainly of British citizens, it is an exceptional opportunity for students to practise the English language.

The event will consist of a typical, British tea, with tea, coffee, pastries and cakes available, a raffle with attractive prizes and entertainment. Each of the charities will have a stand to publicise their work.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION IN MAZARRÓN

Until March 23 the Town Hall of Mazarron host the photography exhibition “Otra mirada de la fotografía taurina” by Paco Sastre. The exhibitions comprises a total of 58 images,  showing a collection of bullfighting and bulls in the field. The exhibition presents some new works of the author and others whic are already known including Ramón Gaya from Murcia.

The inauguration, which took place on February 24^th was chaired by the Mayor of Mazarron, Ginés Campillo, who was accompanied by the Councillor for Culture, Tourism and Education, Maria Celeste Soria, and the author of the exhibition. The Mayor of Mazarron was "especially pleased to have an exhibition of Paco Sastre, since he is one of the most recognized personalities in the bullfighting world." Ginés Campillo hoped  " a lot of people will come to the exhibition, as the pictures are of great quality from the artistic standpoint."

For its part, the author thanked the Town Council of Mazarron for hosting  this exhibition, commenting "I like to express each of the bullfighters at the time of facing the bull, because that's when they are themselves ". The exhibition can be visited from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm and on Fridays also between 5 to 8 pm.

SENSATIONAL WIN FOR MAZARRON FC-26TH FEBRUARY

With only four senior players available, bottom of the table Mazarron went into the game against league leaders Huercal-Overa with seven members of the successful juvenile team in the starting line-up.

Since taking over at Mazarron, new coach Jelco has adopted a flexible 4-4-2 formation with 2 strikers and slowly, over the last three games, the team has responded with improved displays. However, even the most die hard supporters could not have imagined that Mazarron would pick up their first victory for more than four months against such string opposition.

The first action of the game was a speculative free kick from distance by Huecal-Overa but as with almost all their efforts in the first half this went high and wide. Pescao burst though on goal for Mazarron  only to be hacked down from the rear but no free kick was given. Then, in the 26^th minute Jose Da floated a lovely cross into the box and Chema ghosted in at the far post to slam the ball home to give Mazarron the lead and send the home crowd into raptures.

The goal spurred Huercal-Overa into action and it took a good save by Ruben to tip the ball around the post. On 32 minutes, as Mazarron threatened the visitors’ goal, an assault by the Huercal-Overa central defender on Pescau went unpunished, obviously unseen by the referee and other officials.

Huercal-Overa’s best chance of the first half came on the 42 minute when a speculative ball punted up field was missed by both Alfonso and Diego and in the confusion the striker lobbed Ruben but, fortunately, the ball dropped onto the roof of the net for a goal kick.

In the second half,  a clever corner kick from Pescau eluded everyone before hitting the outside of the far post and, as the game flowed end to end , a well rehearsed Mazarron corner lead to Jose Da just missing to the left of the post.

It wasn’t until the 87^nd minute that Huercal-Overa had their best chance of the second half. From a corner the ball was played to the edge of the box where it was struck with vengeance but Ruben dived full length and was totally horizontal when he caught the ball.

Extra time seemed to last forever until eventually the referee blew for full time to signal a fantastic result for Mazarron

Over 200 Brits attend open day in Algorfa

The British Consulate open day in Algorfa was attended by over 200 local residents keen to hear about consular services and find out what their pension, benefit and healthcare entitlements were. Bearing in mind that Algorfa is the town with the highest percentage of British nationals in Spain, almost 60%, there was a lot of interest from residents to discuss local issues and get up to date information from the experts about their entitlements in Spain.

The Consul used the presentation to explain what the Consulate can and cannot do and also to encourage residents to integrate and get involved in their local community. He explained the importance of voting in the regional elections to ensure that people’s concerns are heard, and said he was pleased that many of those present were taking advantage of town hall’s Spanish lessons, as learning a bit of the language plays a key role in integration.

The Pension, Benefit and Healthcare team then went on to clear up doubts that British nationals have about how to access healthcare in Spain and what benefits they can continue to claim once they leave the UK. They explained that all the information covered in their presentation can be found on the UK Foreign Office website in Spain – ukinspain.fco.gov.uk.

The councillor for European Residents, Samantha Biddles, also attended to answer questions on town hall services. During her presentation she outlined her plans to create a better support system for the residents of Algorfa. She explained that she does not want to duplicate assistance that already exists, rather to fill any gaps that there are, drawing on the residents of all nationalities that live in Algorfa.

After the event, British Consul Paul Rodwell said, “It was a great to see over 200 Brits attending the event yesterday and to listen to their concerns as well as giving them a better understanding of what the Consulate does. It is clear from speaking to them that the lack of Spanish is a barrier to integration and this means that many of them are not aware of what their local Spanish social services offer. It is encouraging to see pro-active initiatives from the town hall in offering Spanish lessons and I support the initiative of Sam Biddles, the Councillor of European Residents, to set up a charity in Algorfa to work with social services and other charities up and down the costa to support residents living there.”

BEACH SCOOTER RALLY

The concentration in the square of the Autonomous Communities brought together dozens of onlookers.

The weekend of 25th hand 26th February saw the ninth edition of "EL IX PIMENTÓN BEACH SCOOTER RALLY" which brought together more than a hundred fans of this type of bike.
Activities included the concentration of scooters which took place on Saturday morning in the square of the Autonomous Port promenade where dozens of people attended, many of them drawn by curiosity to see some bikes that could be categorized as true museum pieces.

The bikers enjoyed a nice weekend thanks to good weather and learned about different parts of the coast of Mazarrón, passing the towns of Canada de Gallego, Bolnuevo and, of course, Puerto de Mazarrón. Also, on the Sunday, participants also learned about Mazarrón where they visited the Castle of Los Velez.

The Tower of Horses and Roman Salt Factory Museum and the Central Interpretation Centre of the Phoenician ship completed the visit. The meeting organizer, Félix Reverte, is holding talks with representatives and several of the council to undertake a new activity within a few weeks.

OVER 150 NATIVE SPECIES PLANTED IN THE “CABEZO DEL SANTO AND EL MOLINETE”

During the weekend of 18th and 19th February, about 40 people, including children and adults participated in the reforestation day organized by the hiking club “Amigos de la Naturaleza” of Mazarron. This initiative, which included the assistance of the City of Mazarron through its Department of Environment, developed the area Cabezo del Santo and El Molinete.

Participants planted over 150 plants donated by the garden centres, “Maestra”, “La Fuencisla” and “La Gardenia” These included a large number of native plants such as thyme, rosemary and pines. During the following week, participants visited these two areas to irrigate and control plants during the first days of their life.

As expressed by the organizers, "after this time we want to ensure that reforestation does not remain merely an isolated action. So with the help of volunteers, we will carry out the necessary care for the plants to see them continue to develop and grow our green spaces. "He also thanked the support of the hall "who gave us the means to carry out this activity."

The activity was attended by the Mayor of Mazarron, Ginés Campillo, and the Mayor of the Environment, David Fernandez, who participated in some of the planting, as did a large group from The Association “ASPADEM” who actively participated with their President Juan Zamora. “Amigos de la Naturaleza” and AMPA Gines Garcia are looking into the opportunity to repeat this activity.

THE CITY COUNCIL ANNOUNCES THE FIRST PHOTO CONTEST OF "DAY OF THE WOMAN"

The winner will get a tablet and the second prize a day in the "Balneario de Mazarrón - Hotel Sensol"

The Town Council of Mazarrón, through the Department of Equality, has called the 1st Photography Competition "Day of the Woman" in which the municipality wishes to acknowledge the work of women in social life as well as promoting photographic creativity among citizens. The competition is open to all amateur photographers residing in the municipality who may submit up to 2 works which should be related to women.

Photographs must be original and unpublished and registration to participate in the contest is free. The printed copies must be submitted and accompanied by a digital file on CD in which appears a pseudonym of the author and title of the work. The participant's name, NIE number, telephone number and title of the photograph should also be provided.

The contest includes two awards. The winner of the contest will be given a diploma and a tablet and second place is one day with lunch at the "Balneario de Mazarrón - Hotel Sensol" for 2 people and a diploma. This award is sponsored by the hotel. The winning photographs will remain with the Department of Equality, while the remaining works will be returned to their authors. The jury that decides the awards will be made by various professional photographers and representatives of the City of Mazarrón.

The deadline for papers is open until Thursday 5 March to be delivered to “concejalia de politica social”, c / San Antonio 12, 30870 Mazarron (Murcia). The works will be exhibited at the Town Hall on 8 March, International Women's Day, the jury's verdict and giving awards being given on March 10. For more information please call 968 59 23 94.

YOUNG GEOGRAPHERS HAVE A NICE STUDY DAY IN MAZARRÓN

Participants visited la rambla de Los Moreras and the Erosions of Bolnuevo

Participants at the XXXV National Meeting of Young Geographers enjoyed a pleasant day on 22 February, working in Mazarron where they studied the Rambla de Las Moreras and Erosions of Bolnuevo. The young geographers were received in the Meeting Room of the Town Hall by the Councillor for Education, Tourism and Culture, Maria Celeste Soria, and the Councillor for Environment and Citizenship, David Fernandez.

The latter thanked the meeting organizers for choosing Mazarrón as a place to carry out the field day and encouraged the students coming from different points of the national geography " because good training is crucial to obtain success with the challenging years ahead. " David Fernandez also revealed that the City is in talks with the Association of Young Geographers of the Region of Murcia (GEOMUR) to carry out some specific days like this Mazarrón meeting.

Meanwhile the Councilllor Maria Celeste Soria said that in addition to the rambla de las moreras and erosions of Bolnuevo, "the town has many attractions for geographical study, and we hope that this is a first contact and in the future you return to visit us to discover and study more aspects of our municipality. " The deputies divided among the students, information prepared from tourism to give a broader idea of ​​what Mazarrón can offer from the point of view of tourism, natural and heritage.

After the reception, young people went to the promenade of Las Moreras where they studied the risks of floods and the measures to be taken to prevent accidents to natural phenomena. And this year the meeting was about "Natural Hazards in Southeast Peninsular", studying phenomena such as earthquakes, floods, erosion and drought.

But certainly what most fascinated all of them were the Erosions of Bolnuevo. "A true feast for the senses of a geographer" as explained by the organizer of this activity, Daniel Moreno of Mazarron. They did rest a little before heading to the city of Lorca where they continued with the field day.
